About César

I'm a documentary filmmaker, cinematographer and video editor. I got a master's degree at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. I've focused my work on the environment, migration, Indigenous communities' rights, and the challenges for the peace process in Colombia, among other topics. I'm currently based in Medellín, Colombia after working as a Video Fellow at the BBC News North America in Washington, D.C. Part of my work has been published by the French public network France 24 and Los Angeles Times.
My first short documentary 'Plantas de Poder,' was co-directed with my colleague and friend Chris Ehrmann and premiered at the Santa Fe International Film Festival in the Fall of 2023.
In 2020, just before the pandemic, I traveled with Juan Carlos Zapata to the Colombian border with Ecuador to report on the story of two women Indigenous governors of the Siona people who protect their territory from armed groups and oil companies. The multimedia work was part of the project Land of Resistants, which received a third prize for Excellence in Environmental Journalism at the Fetisov Journalism Awards and was a Premios Gabo‘s finalist.
In 2021, I was one of the United Nations Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellows, and in 2022 I received a Projects for Peace grant to promote local journalism in isolated areas of Colombia.
Among other works, César has told stories from the Colombian and Venezuelan border, the Amazon rainforest and from the areas once ruled by guerrilla groups in his country.
